This route climbs Troutbeck Tongue from free roadside parking near Troutbeck, with room for about four cars, at about 175 m. The Town Head by spring bus stop, about 90 m away, is served by the 508.

Troutbeck Tongue is 364 m high, 207th of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the Far Eastern Fells in Book 2. The line is 3.4 km long and gains about 240 m, but it loses height before it gains any.

It starts with about 110 m of main road and a short residential street, then drops on paths and a lane to about 130 m by 0.5 km. Most of the next 1.6 km follows Ing Lane, asphalt for its first 1 km. It crosses Brockbarrow Gill at about 850 m and Trout Beck at Ing Bridge at about 1.4 km at a steady 130 m to 140 m. A track then crosses Hagg Gill by Hagg Bridge at about 2.1 km.

All the climbing is in the last 1.1 km, from about 150 m at 2.3 km to the top at 364 m. The steepest part lies between 2.8 km and 3.1 km, from about 230 m to 320 m. None of the line is graded for difficulty on the map, and no summit cairn is mapped.

About 2.2 km of the line follows public footpaths and bridleways, and 730 m crosses open access land. About 330 m is on neither: 140 m of path near 2.3 km, and most of a 210 m footway beyond it that the landowner opens by permission rather than public rights of way.
