This route climbs Red Screes from the car park at the top of Kirkstone Pass. Parking is paid, the car park has room for about 68 cars, and at about 450 m it is one of the highest starts on this site. The Pass Inn bus stop, about 50 m away, is served by the 508.
The line is 1.1 km long and gains about 330 m. Almost all of it is one footpath, a public right of way in the data, which climbs from the pass to the summit with no level ground on the way. The path passes about 530 m at 400 m in, 680 m at 800 m, and reaches the top at 779 m. That is an average of nearly one metre up for every three along, among the steepest routes here.
Just before the summit the route passes Red Screes Tarn. The summit has a shelter on the map, and the route ends a few metres from the mapped path at the summit point.
About 1 km of the line is public footpath and about 1 km crosses open access land. No part of the path is graded for difficulty on the map.
Red Screes is 779 m high and belongs to the Eastern Fells in Book 1.
The GPX file is the same line, from the car park to the summit. Because the route is so steep, take extra care on the way back down, and plan any other descent with a map.
