This route climbs Eagle Crag from free roadside parking at Stonethwaite, at about 100 m. The nearest bus stop with a current service is Stonethwaite road end, about 700 m away in a straight line, served by the 77A and 78.

The line is 3 km long and gains about 450 m. It leaves the parking along Chapel Howe Road and crosses Stonethwaite Beck at Stonethwaite Bridge after about 150 m. From there a bridleway carries the route for most of the first 1.7 km. The height changes little, from about 100 m to 130 m. The route crosses Willygrass Gill at about 0.9 km and Greenup Gill at about 1.65 km.

Just after Greenup Gill the line turns onto a path OpenStreetMap grades mountain hiking, with an unpaved surface on the map. It climbs for about 1.1 km, and the steepest part lies between 2.1 km and 2.6 km, where it rises from about 190 m to 415 m. Paths not graded for difficulty on the map, grassy at the end, lead up the last 200 m to the top at 523 m.

About 1.6 km of the line follows public bridleways, and 2.1 km crosses open access land. Apart from about 25 m of road at the start, every part of it is on one or the other.

Eagle Crag is 523 m high, 162nd of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the Central Fells in Book 3.
