This route climbs Sale Fell, starting from free roadside parking near Wythop Mill, with room for about eight cars. It sits at about 160 m. The Close Barn bus stop in Embleton, about 1.5 km away in a straight line, is served by the X4 and X5.
The line is 1.1 km long and gains about 200 m. After about 30 m of lane it takes a path, and most of the height comes in the first half kilometre, which climbs from about 160 m to 300 m.
The second half is gentler. Between about 400 m and 740 m the route follows a track, rising only from about 280 m to 315 m. Paths then carry it over the last 350 m, from about 320 m to the top at 359 m. No part of the line is graded for difficulty on the map, and no cairn or trig pillar is mapped at the summit.
Only about 40 m of the line follows a public footpath in the LDNPA data. Almost all of it, about 1.1 km, crosses open access land, where walkers have a right of access on foot.
Sale Fell is 359 m high, 208th of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the North Western Fells in Book 6.
The GPX file follows the same line from the parking to the top. The simplest return is the way you came, or plan a longer round with a map.
