Silver How is 394 m high, 202nd of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the Central Fells in Book 3. This route starts from Red Bank Road car park in Grasmere, run by Westmorland and Furness Council. Parking is paid and the car park sits at about 70 m. The Heaton Cooper Studio bus stop is about 260 m away, served by the 555, 559, 599 and X8.
The walk is 2 km long with about 320 m of ascent. After a short service road it follows Red Bank Road, a lane, as far as 385 m and stays level at about 70 m. A footpath leaves the lane there, close to the water of Grasmere.
The footpath climbs more gradually at first, to about 160 m by 1 km and 230 m by 1.5 km. At about 1.5 km OpenStreetMap starts to grade the path mountain hiking, and this is the steepest part: between 1.6 km and 1.8 km it rises from about 260 m to 350 m. A last short path leads on, and the route leaves it for the final 10 m or so to the summit cairn at 394 m.
About 1.6 km of the line follows public footpaths, 1.3 km crosses open access land and about 350 m is on the lane. Only a short link of about 30 m by the car park is on none of these in the data.
The GPX file covers the way up only, from the car park to the top. Come back the same way, or plan a longer round with a map before you set out.
