Holme Fell is 316 m high, 213th of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the Southern Fells in Book 4. Only Castle Crag is lower. This route starts from the National Trust's Glen Mary car park, which is paid, has room for about 28 cars, and sits at about 100 m. The Holling Brow bus stop is about 1.4 km away in a straight line and is served by the 505.
The line is 1.9 km long and gains about 230 m. The first 150 m or so follow paths the landowner opens by permission rather than public rights of way. The route then follows a main road for about 25 m and crosses Yew Tree Beck at about 190 m, before joining a bridleway and then a long footway.
For the first kilometre the ground stays between about 95 m and 135 m, and the route passes Yew Tree Tarn at about 0.9 km. The climb starts after that. Between 1 km and 1.8 km the path rises from about 135 m to 300 m, and the summit is at 316 m. None of the line is graded for difficulty on the map, and no cairn or trig pillar is mapped at the top.
About 820 m of the line follows public footpaths and bridleways, and 1.1 km crosses open access land. Two short stretches of that footway, at about 0.3 km and 0.5 km and about 110 m in all, are on neither in the data.
The GPX file is the same line, from the car park to the top. Go back the way you came, or plan a longer walk with a map before you set out.
