This route climbs Place Fell from the Patterdale Hotel car park in Patterdale, run by the hotel. Parking is paid and the car park sits at about 150 m. The Patterdale Hotel bus stop, about 50 m away, is served by the 508 and 509. The St Sunday Crag route starts from the same car park.

The line is 3.5 km long and gains about 520 m. The first kilometre stays between about 150 m and 170 m. It crosses the A road twice, then follows a lane for about 430 m, crossing Goldrill Beck at about 0.6 km on Goldrill Bridge.

At about 1 km the route turns onto a public bridleway and the climbing starts. It crosses Rooking Gill at about 1.3 km. From about 1.4 km OpenStreetMap grades the bridleway hiking. Between 1 km and 2 km the line rises from about 170 m to 385 m.

The last 1.5 km follow a path that is not graded for difficulty on the map. It climbs from about 385 m to 640 m by 3.3 km, then reaches the top at 657 m. No cairn or trig pillar is mapped at the summit.

About 2.9 km of the line follows public footpaths and bridleways, 2.8 km crosses open access land, and about 440 m is on road. The first 80 m or so, from the car park to the main road, are on none of these in the data. Place Fell is 657 m high, joint 108th of the 214 Wainwrights by height, and belongs to the Far Eastern Fells in Book 2.
